Hello there! I am attempting to make a prototype of a space flight sim using Unreal and I thought I would share a few things I've learned as I went through this process.
I am attempting to recreate the controls found in the game Everspace. I've been a big fan of space flight games since Xwing vs Tie Fighter but I thought Everspace did a great job at stripping down a lot of the unnecessary clutter in a space game HUD while at the same time making the controls feel tight so that it felt good to fly through open space in a dog fight or fly through tight spaces. Kind of like if Descent and Descent: Freespace had a baby. I am going to recreate some of the mechanics from Everspace with some original twists on it.
I'm going to talk about a few things as I complete them
- Quaternion Rotation
- Mouse Based Steering Controls
- Turrets that aim towards the mouse location
- Targeting System
- Offscreen Indicator
- Making an O'Neill Cylinder Skybox
- Artificial Intelligence Steering Behaviors
- Multiplayer
I'm hoping to update as I go so stay tuned
